sarovar

Term Definition
sarovar

A sarovar is a large sacred water pool, often found within Sikh temple complexes, used for purification rituals.

Sarovars are central features of gurdwaras, Sikh places of worship, symbolizing both spiritual and physical purity. These large pools are typically fed by natural springs or rivers and are surrounded by steps leading down to the water. Devotees use the water from the sarovar to wash their hands and feet before entering the temple, in adherence to purity rituals. The most famous sarovar surrounds the Harmandir Sahib, or Golden Temple, in Amritsar, India. Known as Amritsar, or "pool of nectar," this sarovar serves as a focal point for meditation and reflection for pilgrims.
