gurdwara

Term Definition
gurdwara

A gurdwara is a Sikh place of worship where devotees gather to pray and sing hymns from the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of Sikhism.

A gurdwara, meaning "the Guru's door", is more than just a place of worship for Sikhs. It serves as a community hub where people of all faiths are welcomed to partake in "Langar", a free community meal, listen to the recitation of holy hymns, and engage in community activities. Each gurdwara houses a copy of the Guru Granth Sahib and is managed by granthis who are responsible for its reading and upkeep. Key architectural features often include a large prayer hall, a kitchen to prepare the Langar, and sometimes accommodations for visitors.
