langar

Term Definition
langar

Langar is a Sikh tradition of a free community meal served to all, regardless of religion, caste, color, or class.

Established by the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak, langar epitomizes the Sikh commitment to equality and hospitality. Typically hosted in a special hall within gurdwaras (Sikh places of worship), it aims to build community by breaking down social barriers and fostering humility and service. Meals are prepared by volunteers known as 'sevadars' and typically feature simple yet nourishing dishes such as dal (lentils), sabzi (vegetables), roti (bread), and kheer (rice pudding). Langar is not just a meal but a practical expression of Sikh teachings on equality, generosity, and community.
